Our Fodder Production Journey: Lessons from the Field

When Hafray Limited began its fodder production journey in late 2024, we faced challenges that many ASAL-based farmers encounter: unreliable rains, limited fodder knowledge, and the need to feed a growing herd year-round.

Our first cycle covered 49 acres with crops including white corn, yellow corn, sugar graze, Boma Rhodes grass, and African Foxtail. We quickly learned that rain gun irrigation systems are not effective for broad-leafed crops — water evaporates before reaching roots.

We adapted: switching to flood-based irrigation for maize and sorghum while keeping sprinklers for grasses. The result? Over 46 tonnes of sorghum silage and 1,800 bales of hay from our second cycle alone.
